8th Edition Thousand Sons list (pre-codex)

By | 01/15/2018

So the Thousand Sons have a codex coming next month, indeed we should have it in our hands by this time in February. As is traditional I have managed to sort out a list I wanted to build just before the codex was announced.

Thousand Sons predators and rhinos - 8th edition

Tracked terrors

Here is the list, pre-codex. Then once the codex is released we can look back and compare the to see what changes I should make.

HQ

Troops

Heavy support

  • Predator with twin lascannons, havoc launcher and heavy bolters
  • Predator with autocannon, havoc launcher and lascannons

Dedicated transport

  • Rhino with havoc launcher

Lord of war

  • Renegade knight with twin avenger gatling cannons, heavy flamers, heavy stubber and stormspear rocket pod
Renegade knight for thousand sons - 8th editon

The Wrath

First off I love Rubic marines and the imagery that goes with them. So three big beefy squads of them seems to make sense. It gives a nice core to the army to build around. The soul reaper cannons help them engage tougher targets or lend firepower elsewhere if needed.

The exalted sorcerers are there to boost the saves of the Rubics and throw in some psychic support. My warlord  would most likely by the sorcerer on foot and walk between two squads of Rubics.  That lets him boost both units invulnerable saves and protect himself. The disc sorcerer would use the speed advantage to get where needed and lend support.

Predators are just great weapon platforms and I really like the models. Adding in the havoc launchers due to spare points. Three launchers across the army are worth a lot more than a single spawn. Mixing the weapons lets me keep lascannons firing at full BS for longer.

Rhino is to give some Rubics a bit of speed to capture an objective. The exalted sorcerer on a disc could catch up easily.

Then my knight, The Wrath, is there because I like rolling a lot of dice and it should be able to be a multi-threat to everything. It puts out a lot of dice from the guns and heavy flamers and volune of fire can deal with most other things.

So what do people think? Will it be all change after the codex? Either way I doubt I will be adding a Mutalith Vortex to my army, terrible model.

I like the list but you lack screening units. You need something to protect you firebase and force the enemy away from your deployment zone and home objectives. The Rubrics are great unit but they are just too expensive for that role.

How will stop the enemy from tagging your tanks or just wreck them with a couple of dedicated assault units? I think you need Tzaangors or Cultists for board control and screening.

I could put in some cultists but the points to get them are hard to find honestly. Mainly the list works on the idea that even the basic troops are tough to crack and the big threats keep firing.

Add in some smites and people get sad quick. When the codex drops this could all change. Five man Runic units might be in.

Elite armies need screening units. It’s not that hard to reach your line turn 1 if you don’t. All armies (at least Codex armies) have deployment tricks like infiltrate or deep strike. A 9” charge isn’t impossible to pull off even if you don’t have bonuses like many have now. Or slingshot Kraken Genestealers, they have an average threat range of at least 30”. The things you can pull off today is just insane.

Finding the points are always hard. Dropping some dakka on the Knight would give you a lot of free points. Same goes if you reduce the numbers of one Rubric squad from ten to five. That alone would give you almost 30 Cultists.

But the best thing would be giving the list a spin and see if it works. I only know what I face and what would work for me.

I really enjoyed that the Chapter Approved Points changes let me upgrade all my Autocannon Predators from Combi-Bolters to Havoc Launchers while keeping the final total the same. Let’s ’em really spit out some serious firepower.
