Imperial Guard: Spec Ops 03 WiP

+++ Cadian Spec Ops +++

Part 3 of my commission piece and we get some serious paint time in. Saturday morning saw this lot as bare plastic and resin parts, they got a quick primer of a matt black and I thought that was all I’d have time to do. Then things started to unfold very quickly as the bug kicked in.

Cadian Special Ops: the old boys.

The look I was told to go for was very dark special ops and while that looks great in a movie it doesn’t stand out well on the tabletop. So with some chat with the client I was given free reign to bring them to this stage. I think the character is really showing through now and they have some life to them. I had thought sneaky guys like these would most likely be wearing gloves but this look helped things stand out a lot.

From the black undercoat they got a fairly heavy grey dry brush, starting from the top down to try simulate the light. Next I started to add the pieces of leather, once again it would have been easy to go with black leather for everything but that wouldn’t make for a very appealing miniature.

Once I had the leathers on I looked at the skin and lenses. First I hit at the lenses with an old Ultramarines Blue, the same I use on my Thousand Sons. While that dried I went over the skin and the photo below shows the tiny area in the ski masks I had to hit, easy for some more difficult for me. When I looked at the lenses I wasn’t happy with how dull they looked so I went over the centres with an even older Enchanted Blue and added a dot of white into the corners to add some shine to it.

After all that I hit the right shoulder pads with a dark purple to help identify this group as a squad compared to the next batch of ten, which it looks like I might be started sooner rather than later…
