SilverTabby’s Random Ramblings

Welcome to Silvertabby’s Random Ramblings!

Rory has very kindly allowed me to have a regular guest spot on his web page, in which I shall meander quite randomly through my various projects, armies, musings and whatever mad conversion it has taken my fancy to build this week.

Let me introduce myself. My name is Kirsten, and I have been part of this hobby for the last 26 years. For half of that time I have professionally painted, with years of work from 2000 onwards in codeces, books (for more than one company) and the Warhammer World Exhibition Centre.

In what spare time isn’t spent wrangling children and rampaging through forests chasing monsters dressed as a psychotic wood elf or a Sister of Battle, I have been known to build and paint my own models and armies. It is these projects that I would like to share with you, along with some painting tutorials, converting tips and – on occasion – things folk would like me to focus and give advice on.

So, today I would like to give a broad overview of the kind of madness I embark on. Some of these figures are now complete and painted, some have been languishing in drawers and boxes for anything up to decades. Some I can firmly point at Rory and say “He inspired me to get off my backside and complete these”, most notably for the recent Squaduary and Dreadtober features he ran.

My Tyranids

Never let a silly inconvenience like there not being a model for a unit, or that you don’t like the given model hold you back! Here are some tasters of the models I have done for my ‘Nids, I shall focus on them later.

My Sisters of Battle

My main army, and which has been Unbound for many years now due to the addition of as many Dinosaurs as I can lay my hands on. For now these will be my main focus, as I am trying to ready a tournament army. They are gradually becoming a painted force…

Other Stuff

I have played many games over the years, so have gangs for Necromunda, teams for Blood Bowl, a number of strange armies, and I am in the process of starting a Ghar force for Beyond The Gates Of Antares. There will be periodic articles featuring these too.

  • …and I thought I had a lot going on. What is the next project for you?

    • Kirsten Williams

      Finish some of these 😉

      • But which ones?!

  • Nid conversions are awesome! And those sisters. Such clear sharp whites. Very nice. Those are not the easiest models to paint! Are you going to pick up the new celestine?

    • Kirsten Williams

Thank you! I already have Celestine waiting in the wings, still boxed until I have finished a few of my ongoing projects. And the other box I picked up has been made into a Seraphim squad to accompany her.

  • D Power

Adding dinosaurs to a sororitas force! Now that’s ingenious, and well executed. Love seeing the skaven bits used too.

    • Kirsten Williams

They aren’t all I’m adding, but that will have to wait until some of the are done…

Oh who am I kidding? Of course I will add more before these are done 😉

  • You clearly need to get more paint on those dino-riding-sisters, the conversions are awesome. Oh and the Hrudd, you should paint those too 🙂 The Escher gangers look beautiful and striking with the purple and teal hair.

    • Kirsten Williams

I’m working on it! And thank you!

  • That’s a lot of impressive stuff. The conversions are great, and I envy your sculpting. The painting is awesome. It makes me wish Sisters were better on the table after seeing how well you painted yours.

    • Kirsten Williams

Thank you! The sculpting just takes loads of practising, and doing tiny bits at each sitting. And as for their effectiveness on the table, I will admit I cheat a little. For example, the Dinoriders use Biker rules…

      • You must play with a pretty good group of people to let you use the Dinos as Bikes. I’d let you do it.

        • Kirsten Williams

There’s been no complaints yet 😉 I have yet to test the ‘counts as’ rules in a tournament yet…

        • One of them was me! Stupid jinking dinosaurs!

  • Von

Some quality, bizarre stuff. I like the general “strap appropriate-looking big guns onto a monster’s back” aesthetic – the Hrud Stormsurge is probably my favourite, but I’m cheap for giant undead rodents in general.

Is there… a reason for the dinosaurs? Beyond “dinosaurs are cool, space nuns are cool, you know what’s really cool? SPACE NUN DINOSAURS!”, which speaks for itself really.

    • Kirsten Williams

Nope, it’s as simple as that. I roll with the This Would Be Cool vibe a lot…

  • Some great conversions ans painting there Kirsten. I look forward to seeing more of you stuff on here 🙂

  • Spoticus

I love the Trygon pattern, that looked so crisp! Great conversion work.

  • Turkadactyl

Nice Dino-Riders. Loving the conversions. Looking forward to more progress reports.

  • As a purist, I look at the Sisters and cry, “HERESY MOST FOUL!” However, as a modeller and painter, I look at the Sisters and cry, “HOLY EMPEROR OF MANKIND! How good are they?” The Penitent Engine looks amazing and I can’t wait to see it painted.
    NARF!
